You may have heard us talk about the “accelerated feedback” revolution. If you haven’t, it’s where companies throw out old processes and embrace newer methodologies like Agile, which enables continuous delivery of solutions into product environments.
The Agile journey may have been slow in the past for some to catch on to. But the future is now. Successful companies today have realized that in order to get to market faster, they need to adopt a “product” mindset instead of a “project” mindset. What this means is instead of having the mentality that a project has a “completed” end date in scopes and budgets, it treats the experience as something to be continuously maintained and updated. It takes into account the giant opportunity to improve based on user/customer feedback and the speed at which the market transforms. It eliminates frustrations that come out of a less-than-exciting reaction when a project launches into a space that’s already behind in the market.
Examples of the disruption that can happen when a company uses this approach can be seen with Uber in the ride industry, or Amazon, first with books, now with everything. For both, a commitment to product management was the key to their growth.

Define the core differences between project and product
Think about how software companies operate. The main ingredient is consistency of team and product focus. However, if you bring more stakeholders to the table who don’t have a product mindset, it can cripple speed and slow you down in the market.
Accelerate the small things
It’s a big job to change approaches. We get it. But it’s worth it. The key is to pay attention to the details. In this new paradigm, the product owner becomes a key player. That person is the one responsible for getting feedback, taking ownership, and collaborating with the team. Using this approach, product owners should be able to find the MVP in any product and identify the minimal number of stories to get there.
